(RENFREW, ON) - The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 320 calls for service from Monday June 11 to midnight Sunday June 17.

Domestic Violence

Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 14 domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with assault and four counts of failing to comply with an undertaking, one female was charged with failing to comply with an undertaking and one male was charged with assault. No other criminal offences were alleged.

Thefts

On Wednesday June 13 the OPP began an investigation into an attempted theft at Canadian Tire in Arnprior. Store security intervened when two suspects attempted to steal several large items. The suspects, a male and female abandoned the merchandise and fled in a black SUV. The suspects have been identified and the investigation is continuing.

RIDE Spot Checks

Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) is a program supported by the courts and police across Canada to assist in the detection of impaired drivers. OPP officers will continue to set up RIDE spot checks at random locations and times to ensure drivers are complying with the laws regarding consuming alcohol, drugs or other intoxicants which may lead to impairing their ability to operate a motor vehicle. 15 RIDE spot checks were conducted during the last week. No impaired drivers were located at these checks. RIDE spot checks area a deterrent for impaired driving, you just never know where or when a RIDE spot check may be set up.

Impaired Driver

On Monday June 11 at approximately 9 pm OPP officers received several complaints about an erratic driver eastbound vehicle on Highway 17 in McNab Braeside Township. The suspect vehicle was located and stopped on Staye Court Drive in Arnprior. The male driver had been drinking and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. He was arrested and taken to the Arnprior Detachment where he refused to provide further samples of his breath for analysis. Philip DOUGLAS aged 37 of Charlottetown, PEI was charged with impaired driving and refusing to provide breath samples. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on July 4. Provincial Constable (PC) Dallas MacLeod led the investigation.

On Wednesday June 13 at approximately 7:15 pm Renfrew OPP received a complaint of a motor vehicle collision on Calabogie Road near Fleming Drive in the Township of Greater Madawaska from the Renfrew County paramedics. When officers arrived they found a single vehicle had left the roadway and struck a rock cut. The male driver had been drinking and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. After further breath tests at the detachment Jordan POLLARI aged 29 of Oshawa was charged with impaired driving and driving over 80 mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on July 18. PC Troy Dobbie led the investigation.

If you see or suspect an impaired driver, please call 9-1-1. Provide the call taker with as much information as you can about the suspect vehicle such as licence plate, colour and type of vehicle, direction of travel and anything you can add about the driver. Impaired driving is considered a life threatening emergency and 9-1-1 is the number to call! If you are driving and see a suspected impaired driver, you are still encouraged to call 9-1-1. Calling 9-1-1 during an emergency is an exception to the distracted driving law in Ontario. The Police only encourage you to do so if you can safely make the call. If not, please pull over and report the possible impaired driver immediately.

Mischief

Police are investigating several mischief cases from the past week including a pool liner being damaged, a vehicle being scratched with a key, a home on Peter Street in Renfrew being egged, and a bug shield on a vehicle being smashed.

Fraud

Police are investigating several reported fraud attempts, including a company attempting to remove funds from a victim's bank account after using the company to fix a computer problem, a victim cancelling a credit card charge for fixing a computer problem, and a victim advising they were a subject of identity theft. None of the above victims have lost any funds, and all were advised to report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. One victim who did loose funds reported cashing a cheque for a stranger and then purchasing gift cards for the suspect. PC Troy Dobbie is continuing that investigation.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) is the central agency in Canada that collects information and criminal intelligence on such matters as mass marketing fraud (e.g., telemarketing), advance fee fraud (e.g., West African letters), Internet fraud and identification theft complaints. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre estimates that less than 5% of mass marketing fraud is ever reported. To get a true picture of the actual scope of the fraud problem it is important that people report fraud attempts, and successful fraudulent transactions to them. Report the incident to your local law enforcement. This ensures that your police of jurisdiction is aware of what scams are targeting their residents and businesses. Keep a log of all your calls and record all file or occurrence numbers. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501 or online through their Fraud Reporting System (FRS). Report the incident to the financial institution where the money was sent (e.g., money service business such as Western Union or MoneyGram, bank or credit union, credit card company or internet payment service provider). If the fraud took place online through Facebook, eBay, a classified ad such as Kijiji or a dating website, be sure to report the incident directly to the website. Found Bike

On Friday June 1, 2018 a bicycle was found abandoned near Lochiel St and O'Gorman Ave, Renfrew. Police attended and retrieved the bike which was hidden in the tree line. The bike was a white and purple Schwinn Suspend mountain bike. Anyone who may have had a bike of this description stolen can call the OPP and speak to PC Jeff Bookholt to further identify the bike.

Marine Patrol

During four hours of patrol on White Lake by the OPP marine unit, four charges were laid. The patrol took place on Sunday June 17 and all charges were for having open alcohol in a public place.
