(RENFREW, ON) - The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 240 calls for service during the past week, from Monday June 4 until Sunday June 10.
Domestic Violence
Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated six domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with two counts of assault. No other criminal offences were alleged. Stolen Mini-Excavator
Police are investigating after a mini-excavator, valued at more than $100,000 was stolen from a business in Renfrew. On Wednesday June 6 the owner reported a Caterpillar brand mini-excavator with attached 30 inch HD digging bucket was stolen sometime the previous night from Corington Construction on Gillan Road. The machine was driven across a field to a parking lot/loading area at Scapa Tapes and then loaded onto a float and taken away. Anyone who may have witnessed anything related to this theft late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
Impaired Driver
On Tuesday June 5 at approximately 5 pm OPP officers were dispatched to check a suspicious vehicle that was parked and idling on Harry Street in Renfrew. Officers found that the female driver had been drinking and arrested her for impaired care or control of a motor vehicle. Following breath tests at the detachment she was charged with impaired care or control of a motor vehicle and care or control of a motor vehicle over 80mgs. Megan MUNHALL aged 36 of Renfrew was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on July 4. PC Patrick O'Connor led the investigation.
Mischief
A CAT excavator has become a favorite target for vandals in Cobden after the machine was targeted for damage twice in seven days. The machine was first damaged with spray paint and broken windows on Thursday May 31. The same machine was again vandalised on June 4. The machine was parked off Astrolabe Road in Cobden both times. Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Suspicious Mail
Have you received mail in a brown envelope which appears to come from the Government? Inside is a form to complete, address to "Canadian Residents Born After 1938", with information about supplementing the Canada Pension Plan Death Benefit with the "Final Needs Planning Program". This is in fact from an insurance company, looking to sell life insurance.
Be careful about providing your personal information to anyone, especially when they try to mimic government logos and forms. Deal with local businesses who you know and trust, or ask friends and family for referrals.
Fraud
One victim reported buying $5,000 worth of Bitcoins and sending them to someone pretending to represent the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). PC Dave Peace is investigating after the victim received a call stating he would be arrested unless he paid $5,000 to CRA. The victim was instructed to go to a hotel in Ottawa that had a Bitcoin ATM and transfer the funds to an account number provided.
The CRA does not operate in this manner. You are not threatened with arrest by legitimate employees of the CRA. Do not send the CRA iTunes cards, bitcoins or other forms of money transfers. If you are unsure who you are dealing with when receiving a call, hang up and call the CRA yourself.
